TransVersions II

Jeff Kuipers

What do the floor of a hair salon, a chiropracter's back-yard fence, the cover of Transversions #1 have in Common? They all boast original artwork by Victoria artist Jeff Kuipers.

In the mid-1980's, Jeff was a member of an artists group called Island Illustrators. Fellow member Ron Lightburn did a cover for what turned out to be the very enduring Canadian SF anthology series, Tesseracts. For the cover of Tesseracts 2, Ron talked the publisher into holding a contest among members of Island Illustrators. Kuiper's painting won, and since that time, he has illustrated 4 more covers for Beach Holme (not all for the Tesseracts line) Books. He has played no part in the actual design of any of the five books, and had no say in things like the choice, placement and colours of typefaces for titles and writers' names. Like the frame of a painting, the book design can either enhance or detract from the painting itself.

Jeff Kuipers now lives in Vancouver. If you're interested in obtaining or commissioning work from Jeff, he can be reached at JKuipers@radical.ca
